In an exclusive interview with Dr. Laura Purdy of SWELL Medical PC, we dive into a raw and candid conversation about the abuse of power in professional environments—something she’s witnessed first hand throughout her career. From her time in the Army, where she saw people taking advantage of their authority, to her experiences as an employee and, now, as a CEO, Dr. Purdy has lived through the darker side of leadership and corporate structures. But her story isn't just about observation—it’s about action.

"I started my business to remove that ‘evil’—to build a culture where my team felt protected and valued," Dr. Purdy shares, reflecting on her initial vision. "But it’s been a tough lesson to see that even within my own company, I’ve had employees in positions of power abuse the trust I placed in them. It’s one of the things I hate most—when those entrusted with leadership use it to hurt rather than help."

Dr. Purdy opens up about the painful realization that it’s not always the external forces that challenge your mission; sometimes, it’s the people you hire to build it. "It’s tough for employees to feel empowered to speak up when the very culture that’s supposed to protect them is led by those abusing their power. And that’s on me. I take the blame because I hired and trusted those around me. But," she continues, "those who promise to create a safe and thriving environment are responsible too. Employee laws are in place to protect the staff, but they should also safeguard the environment set by leadership. It’s easy to blame the CEO, and yes, I’ll fall on the sword—but the real lesson here is how we all share responsibility for creating, maintaining, and enhancing the company culture."

With a self-deprecating smile, she adds, "It’s funny how the same people complaining about the culture are often the ones who helped create the toxic environment. But nonetheless, you live and learn. It’s a reset for both the company and me as a leader, and I’m working harder than ever to rebuild the positive vision I had in mind."

As Dr. Purdy reflects on the famous quote from Spider-Man, she reminds us all that "With great power, comes great responsibility." It’s a sentiment that resonates deeply in her journey, as she continues to learn, evolve, and push forward—not only for herself but for the culture she’s committed to creating at SWELL Medical PC.
